MAX7219EWG+T-HX/MAX7221EWG+T-HX are compact, serial input/output, common-cathode display drivers designed to interface microprocessors (μPs) with up to 8-digit 7-segment numeric LED displays, bar-graph displays, or 64 individual LEDs. On-chip functions include a BCD Code-B decoder, multiplex scan circuitry, segment and digit drivers, and an 8×8 static RAM to store each digit. A single external resistor sets the segment current for all LEDs. The MAX7221EWG+T-HX is SPI- and QSPI-compatible and includes slew-rate-limited segment drivers to minimize EMI. A convenient 4-wire serial interface connects to all common μPs. Individual digits can be addressed and updated without rewriting the entire display. In addition, the MAX7219EWG+T-HX/MAX7221EWG+T-HX allow the user to select Code-B decoding or no-decode operation on a per-digit basis. These devices feature a low-power shutdown mode that consumes only 150μA, analog and digital brightness control options, a scan-limit register that allows the user to display 1 to 8 digits, and a test mode that illuminates all LEDs simultaneously.
