This conductivity probe can be fully submerged in fresh or salt water up to the SMA connector and may be immersed indefinitely. The conductivity probe works by measuring the electrical conductivity of a solution and is commonly used in hydroponics, aquaculture, and freshwater systems to monitor the concentration of nutrients, salinity, or impurities in the water. Inside the probe are two opposing electrodes; an alternating voltage is applied to drive cations toward the negative electrode and anions toward the positive electrode — the more free electrolytes present in the liquid, the higher the conductivity. For accurate readings, the entire sensing area must be fully immersed in the liquid.
