Introduction
The TPS2549 device is a USB charging port controller and power switch with a current-sense output for controlling upstream power. The device maintains USB port voltage at 5V even under excessive charging current conditions. This is critical for systems with long USB cables, where significant voltage drops occur during rapid charging of portable devices.
The TPS2549 47mΩ power switch features two selectable programmable current limits, supporting port power management by providing a lower current limit when adjacent ports carry heavy loads. This is critical for systems with multiple ports where the upstream power supply cannot simultaneously deliver full-load current to all ports.
The DCP_Auto solution detects and selects the appropriate D+ and D− settings to communicate with connected devices, enabling rapid charging at full-load current conditions. Integrated CDP detection supports fast charging for most portable devices using synchronous data communication, with charging currents up to 1.5A.
The unique client mode function allows software updates to client devices while avoiding power conflicts by disabling the internal power switch while maintaining data line connections.
In addition, the TPS2549 device integrates VBUS short-circuit protection for D+ and D−, preventing damage from accidental short circuits between D+ and/or D− and VBUS. To save board space, the TPS2549 device also integrates ESD protection, meeting IEC61000-4-2 requirements without requiring external circuitry on D+ and D−.
