Introduction
XPD977 is a multifunctional USB three-port controller integrating USB Type-C, USB Power Delivery (PD) 3.0/2.0 with PPS, QC3.0/2.0 CLASS B fast charging protocol, Huawei FCP/SCP fast charging protocol, Samsung AFC fast charging protocol, VOOC 2.0 fast charging protocol, BC1.2 DCP, and Apple 2.4A charging specification. It provides a complete Type-C and Type-A three-port charging solution for AC-DC adapters, power banks, car chargers, and other devices. XPD977 uniquely integrates the proprietary XPD-LINK interconnect communication technology. Through the XPD-LINK interconnect function, XPD977 can be applied flexibly and easily in multi-port charging solutions with multiple Type-C and Type-A ports. The built-in Type-C protocol in XPD977 supports automatic system wake-up upon Type-C device insertion, intelligent detection of plug orientation (front/reverse insertion), and connection establishment. The integrated Type-C PD 3.0 protocol supports Biphase Mark Coding (BMC), with a hardware-integrated physical layer protocol and protocol engine — no software involvement required for encoding/decoding. When either a Type-C or Type-A port has a device connected, each port can independently deliver fast charging. When both Type-C and Type-A ports have devices connected, XPD977 reduces the output voltage to 5V to power the devices; the Type-C port PD broadcasts only 5V/3A while retaining BC1.2 and Apple 2.4A, and the Type-A port retains Apple 2.4A only. Notably, when a Type-A port remains connected to an Apple charging cable but no Apple device is plugged in, the Type-C port still supports fast charging. In charger applications, charging cables are often permanently attached to the charger. XPD977 perfectly resolves the fast charging challenge when both Type-A and Type-C ports are connected to charging cables. In addition, the Type-A port full-charge cutoff current threshold is as low as 10mA, supporting low-current charging for smart wearable devices. XPD977 implements dynamic voltage regulation through a single Sink/Source current source connected to the feedback pin of an AC-DC or DC-DC converter. Both startup and voltage transition processes feature soft-start/soft-transition functionality for smooth voltage transitions. XPD977 integrates an internal CC loop control, which effectively manages total current under shared power supply to relieve pressure on the front-end power source. XPD977 supports secondary programming for in-field firmware upgrades. XPD977 incorporates multiple built-in protection mechanisms to ensure device safety, including dynamic overvoltage/undervoltage/overcurrent protection (protection thresholds are proportionally adjusted based on the device's requested operating voltage/current) and startup monitoring (port voltage is monitored for safe status before VBUS output is enabled). XPD977 integrates a 10mΩ VBUS path power switch and an internal discharge path, reducing external component count, enabling fast output shutdown and recovery to a safe state upon fault detection. XPD977 is available in a QFN5×5-32 package. The peripheral circuit in application is highly compact, enabling easy compliance with USB PD certification testing.
