Introduction
The ADE7880 is a high-accuracy, polyphase energy metering IC with a serial interface and three flexible pulse outputs. The device incorporates several second-order Σ-Δ ADCs, digital integrators, a reference circuit, and all necessary signal processing circuits to perform total (fundamental and harmonic) active/apparent power measurement and RMS calculation, as well as fundamental active/reactive power measurement. In addition, the ADE7880 can compute the harmonic RMS, active/reactive/apparent power on the phase and neutral currents and phase voltages, as well as power factor and harmonic distortion for each harmonic on all phases. Total harmonic distortion (THD) can also be calculated for all current and voltage inputs. A fixed-function DSP performs this signal processing, with the DSP program stored in internal ROM. The ADE7880 is suitable for measuring active, reactive, and apparent power in various 3-wire and 4-wire three-phase configurations, such as wye or delta. Each phase supports system calibration functions including RMS offset correction, phase calibration, and gain calibration. The CF1, CF2, and CF3 logic outputs can provide various power information: total active/apparent power, the sum of current RMS values, or fundamental active/reactive power. The ADE7880 features waveform sampling registers that allow access to all ADC outputs. The device also provides power quality monitoring functions such as sag and swell detection, instantaneous high current variation detection, line voltage period measurement, and the angle between phase voltage and current. The ADE7880 supports communication via both SPI and I²C serial interfaces. A dedicated high-speed data capture (HSDC) port can be used in conjunction with I²C to access ADC outputs and real-time power information. The device also has two interrupt request pins, IRQ0 and IRQ1, to indicate that an enabled interrupt event has occurred. When the ADE7880 encounters tamper conditions, three specially designed low-power modes ensure continuous energy accumulation. The ADE7880 is available in a 40-lead LFCSP lead-free package and is pin-compatible with the ADE7854, ADE7858, ADE7868, and ADE7878 devices.
