Introduction
Capacitive sensing is a non-contact sensing technology with low power consumption, low cost, and high resolution. It is suitable for various applications ranging from proximity detection and gesture recognition to remote liquid level sensing. The sensors in a capacitive sensing system can use any metal or conductor, enabling a highly flexible and low-cost system design. The main limiting factor for the sensitivity of capacitive sensing applications lies in the noise sensitivity of the sensors. The FDC2x1x features an innovative anti-EMI architecture that maintains performance even in high-noise environments. The FDC2x1x is a series of noise- and EMI-resistant, high-resolution, high-speed, multi-channel capacitance digital converters for capacitive sensing solutions. These devices use an innovative narrowband-based architecture that provides high suppression of noise and interference while offering high resolution at high speeds. The series supports a wide excitation frequency range, providing flexibility for system design. The wide frequency range is particularly useful for the reliability of sensing conductive liquids such as detergents, soapy water, and ink. The FDC221x is optimized for a resolution of up to 28 bits, while the FDC211x offers a sampling rate of up to 13.3 ksps, facilitating applications with fast-moving targets. The large maximum input capacitance of 250 nF supports the use of remote sensors and tracks changes in the environment over time, temperature, and humidity. The FDC2x1x series is designed for proximity sensing and liquid level sensing applications and is suitable for all liquid types. For non-conductive liquid level sensing applications with interference (e.g., human hands), the FDC1004 with an integrated active shield driver is recommended.
