Introduction
The DRV8871 device is a brushed DC motor driver suitable for printers, appliances, industrial equipment, and other small machines. Two logic inputs control the H-bridge driver, which consists of four N-channel metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) and can control the motor bidirectionally with a peak current of up to 3.6A. Using the current decay mode, the motor speed can be controlled by pulse-width modulation (PWM) of the inputs. If both inputs are set to low, the motor driver will enter a low-power sleep mode. The DRV8871 device features an advanced current regulation circuit that does not use an analog voltage reference or an external sense resistor. This new solution uses a standard low-cost, low-power resistor to set the current threshold. The device can limit the current to a known level, which can significantly reduce the system power consumption requirements and eliminate the need for large-capacity capacitors to maintain a stable voltage, especially during motor startup and shutdown. The device provides comprehensive protection against faults and short circuits, including under-voltage lockout (UVLO), over-current protection (OCP), and thermal shutdown (TSD). After the fault is cleared, the device will automatically resume normal operation.
