Introduction
The LM78LxxA series three-terminal positive voltage regulators feature internal current limiting and thermal shutdown, making them virtually indestructible. With adequate heatsinking, they can deliver output currents up to 100 mA. Designed for use as fixed voltage regulators, they are suited for a wide range of applications, including local or on-board regulation to eliminate noise and distribution problems associated with single-point regulation. In addition, they can be used with power pass elements to form high-current voltage regulators. As replacements for zener diode/resistor combinations, the LM78LxxA series typically improves output impedance by two orders of magnitude while reducing quiescent current and noise.
