Optical liquid level sensor using modulated infrared light for liquid detection. Features a built-in amplifier. Transmitter and receiver are fully encapsulated in solid plastic for mounting to container walls. VP01/02 uses a polysulfone housing, resistant to most acids and alkalis. VP03/04EM uses a polyamide 12 housing, resistant to various solvents. The sensor contains an infrared emitter, receiver, and amplifier with transistor output. The light source is a GaAs diode that emits infrared light in short pulses. The conical tip of the sensor forms a 90° angle, which acts as a prism. When the sensor tip is in air, the light beam emitted by the GaAs diode on one side of the sensor head is internally reflected to the phototransistor on the other side; when the sensor tip is immersed in liquid, the light beam is not refracted by the prism and the phototransistor receives no signal. This sensor type can operate in aqueous solutions such as oil, wastewater, beer, wine, and alcohol without any accessories.
