Introduction
The DRV8889-Q1 and DRV8889A-Q1 are fully integrated stepper motor drivers supporting up to 1.5A full-scale current, featuring an internal microstepping indexer, smart tune decay technology, advanced stall detection algorithm, and integrated current sensing. The device supports up to 1/256 microstepping for smooth motion profiles. Integrated current sensing eliminates the need for two external sense resistors, saving board space and cost. With the advanced stall detection algorithm, designers can detect whether the motor has stalled and take action as needed, improving efficiency and reducing noise. The device offers 8 decay mode options, including smart tune, slow, and mixed decay options. Smart tune technology automatically adjusts for optimal current regulation performance. The device also includes an integrated torque DAC that allows the controller to adjust output current via SPI without modifying the VREF voltage reference. The device provides a low-power sleep mode via the nSLEEP pin. The device features full-duplex, 4-wire synchronous SPI communication and supports daisy-chaining of up to 63 devices for configurability and detailed fault reporting.
The DRV8889-Q1 and DRV8889A-Q1 are integrated motor driver solutions for bipolar stepper motors. The device integrates two N-channel power MOSFET H-bridges, integrated current sensing and regulation circuitry, and a microstepping indexer. The device can be powered from a 4.5V to 45V supply voltage and is capable of delivering up to 2.4A peak, 1.5A full-scale, or 1.1A RMS output current. Actual full-scale and RMS current depend on ambient temperature, supply voltage, and PCB thermal performance. Compared to the DRV8889-Q1, the DRV8889A-Q1 includes additional settings for open-load detection time and slow decay to drive blanking time. Additionally, the DRV8889-Q1 enables the H-bridges by default at power-up, while the DRV8889A-Q1 disables the H-bridges. The device uses an integrated current sensing architecture that eliminates the need for two external power sense resistors. This architecture employs a current mirror method using internal power MOSFETs for current sensing, eliminating power dissipation in sense resistors. The current regulation setpoint is controlled by the voltage at the VREF pin. These features reduce external component cost, system power consumption, and PCB board size. The simple STEP/DIR interface allows an external controller to manage stepper motor direction and step rate. The internal indexer performs high-accuracy microstepping without requiring the external controller to manage winding current levels. The indexer supports full-step, half-step, and 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64, 1/128, and 1/256 microstepping. In addition to the standard half-step mode, a non-circular half-step mode is available to increase torque output at higher motor speeds. Users can configure current regulation among several decay modes. Available decay mode options include slow-mixed, mixed decay, smart tune ripple control, and smart tune dynamic decay current regulation schemes. Slow-mixed decay mode uses slow decay on rising steps and mixed decay on falling steps. Smart tune decay mode automatically adjusts for optimal current regulation performance and compensates for motor variation and aging effects. Smart tune ripple control uses a variable off-time, ripple control scheme to minimize distortion in motor winding current. Smart tune dynamic decay uses a fixed off-time, dynamic decay percentage scheme to minimize motor winding current distortion while achieving minimum frequency components. In smart tune ripple control mode, the device can detect motor overload stall conditions or end-of-line motion by detecting the back-EMF phase shift between rising and falling current quadrants of the motor current. The device integrates spread-spectrum clock functionality for the internal digital oscillator and internal charge pump. Combined with output slew rate control, this feature minimizes radiated emissions from the device. The torque DAC feature enables the controller to adjust output current without modifying the VREF voltage reference. When high output torque is not required, the torque DAC can be accessed via a digital input pin, allowing the controller to reduce system power consumption by lowering motor current draw. The system includes a low-power sleep mode to allow power savings when not actively driving the motor.
