Introduction
The ADS1018 is a precision, low-power 12-bit noiseless analog-to-digital converter (ADC). This device comes in an ultra-small leadless X2QFN-10 package or an ultra-thin small outline package (VSSOP)-10, and has all the functions required to measure the most common sensor signals. The ADS1018 integrates a programmable gain amplifier (PGA), a voltage reference, an oscillator, and a high-precision temperature sensor. These features, along with a wide power supply voltage range of 2V to 5.5V, make the ADS1018 well-suited for power- and space-constrained sensor measurement application reference design solutions.
The ADS1018 performs conversions at a data rate of up to 3300 samples per second (SPS). The PGA has an input range of ±256mV to ±6.144V, enabling high-resolution measurement of both large and small signals. The device measures dual differential inputs or four single-ended inputs through an input multiplexer (MUX). The high-precision temperature sensor is used to monitor system-level temperature or provide cold-junction compensation for thermocouples.
The ADS1018 can be configured to operate in either continuous conversion mode or single-shot mode. In single-shot mode, the device automatically powers down after completing a conversion. In the idle state, single-shot mode significantly reduces current consumption. All data is transmitted via the serial peripheral interface (SPI).
