Introduction
The SBSM series are surface-mount EMI filters available in C-type and Pi-type topologies, rated at 10A or 20A. These filters are mounted to the PCB using the same soldering method as chip capacitors, with both signal lines and ground pads requiring soldering. In addition to conventional PCB mounting, SBSM filters are also suitable for installation on board-mounted bulkheads or partitions, a method that significantly improves shielding between the filter's input and output, thereby enhancing high-frequency performance. Measurements have demonstrated that the improved shielded mounting approach (compared to conventional open PCB mounting) maintains excellent attenuation characteristics at frequencies up to 1GHz and beyond. Soldering must be carefully controlled to avoid thermal shock causing thermal cracking of the ceramic dielectric; the recommended temperature ramp rate during preheating is approximately 2°C/s, typically within the range of 1.5°C/s to 4°C/s in practice, depending on the substrate and components. The SBSP series E01, E03, and E07 are compatible with all standard solders including lead-free, with a maximum temperature rating of 260°C. For the SBSG, SBSM, and SFSS series, soldering time should be minimized and the peak temperature kept below 220°C. After soldering, filters should be allowed to cool naturally to ambient temperature; forced air cooling or immediate flushing with cold fluid should be avoided to prevent cracking. The use of FlexiCap termination technology is strongly recommended to reduce the risk of mechanical cracking.
