Introduction
Carbon composition resistors exhibit excellent surge and high-frequency performance due to the bulk nature of their resistive element. Unlike wirewound and film resistors, they have no resistance wire winding and no deposited film that can rupture under overload pulses. The resistive element is a solid core hot-molded from resin and carbon, with no helical turns of resistance wire or film, resulting in extremely low inductance — essentially equivalent to a straight wire. However, this outstanding surge and high-frequency capability comes at the cost of relatively poor environmental stability, particularly in humid conditions. Carbon composition resistors are not suitable for precision applications, which are generally better served by other resistor types such as NTE's standard metal film types. Furthermore, carbon composition resistors are less stable than other resistor types under high-humidity conditions and are susceptible to moisture absorption, which can cause resistance values to shift by as much as 10%. The change in resistance value may be positive or negative (predominantly positive), and can typically be recovered by conditioning the resistors at 100°C - 105°C or through dry storage. Resistors found to be out of tolerance prior to resistance measurement should be conditioned in a dry oven at 100°C ± 5°C for 96 ± 4 hours.
