The Linear Ball Bearing (LBB) Super Precision Gauging Head is a dimensional measurement probe designed for high-accuracy, repeatable measurements in quality control and metrology applications. The linear ball bearing system within the gauging probe reduces radial clearance to an extremely low level and minimizes friction to achieve super precision measurement.

The bearing assembly uses two rows of miniature balls. The balls roll on a non-rotating plunger. The plunger is hardened to Rockwell 65, hard chrome plated, and precision ground for optimum repeatability and resistance to indentation. The contact end of the plunger features a removable tungsten carbide ball tip. The plunger and bearings are housed in a cylindrical sleeve that is hand-honed and matched to the ball bearing assembly. The precision fit ensures excellent repeatability. Because the hardness of the bearing and sleeve are matched, the plunger can better withstand side loads, extending service life.

A Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) is mounted at the other end of the tubular housing. Because there is no physical contact between its core and coil, the LVDT produces a highly repeatable output voltage proportional to displacement.

The LBB gauging head features a unique two-piece construction that allows repair if the probe body or cable is damaged. (Certain models) A flex-relief spring protects the cable exit. A positive mechanical stop prevents shock damage to the LVDT in the event of contact tip overtravel.

Spring-extend LBB gauging heads feature user-adjustable pretravel/overtravel settings. Pneumatic-extend, spring-retract units require clean, dry, oil-free air at 5 to 15 PSI (0.34 to 1 bar); by varying air pressure, users can control gauging force to ensure the probe will not damage finished surfaces or distort precision parts.
