Introduction
The ADuM4160 is a USB port isolator that combines high-speed CMOS technology with monolithic air-core transformer technology to deliver excellent operating performance and easy integration with low-speed and full-speed USB-compatible peripherals. Many microcontroller USB implementations provide only the D+ and D− lines to the external pins. This is sufficient in many cases, as it requires minimal external components and simplifies the design; however, it presents challenges when isolation is required. The USB lines must automatically switch between actively driving D+/D−, receiving data, and allowing external resistors to set the bus idle state. The ADuM4160 architecture can both detect data flow direction and control the state of the output buffers. Data flow direction is determined on a packet-by-packet basis. The ADuM4160 combines edge-detection-based iCoupler technology with internal logic to implement a transparent, easily configurable, upstream-facing port isolator. Isolating the upstream port offers multiple advantages, including circuit simplicity, power management, and robust operation. The propagation delay of this isolator is comparable to that of standard hubs and cables. It can be powered from a 4.5 V to 5.5 V supply on either side and internally regulates that voltage to signal levels, enabling direct connection to V_BUS. The ADuM4160 provides isolated control of the pull-up resistor so that peripherals can control connection timing. The device features low idle current, eliminating the need for a suspend mode. The ADuM3160 is also available as a 2.5 kV version.
