Introduction
KEMET's U2J dielectric Flexible Termination (FT-CAP) MLCCs feature a unique flexible termination system integrated with KEMET's standard termination materials. Conductive silver epoxy is used between the base metal and nickel barrier layers of KEMET's standard termination system to provide flexibility while maintaining termination strength, solderability, and electrical performance. This technology is designed to address the primary failure mode of MLCCs — flex cracking — which is typically caused by excessive tensile and shear stresses generated during board flexing and thermal cycling. The flexible termination technology suppresses the transfer of board stress to the rigid ceramic body, thereby reducing flex cracks that can lead to low IR or short-circuit failures. KEMET automotive-grade capacitors meet the stringent AEC-Q200 qualification requirements of the Automotive Electronics Council.
While this technology cannot eliminate mechanical damage that may occur under extreme environmental and operating conditions, it offers superior flex performance compared to standard termination systems. FT-CAP complements KEMET's Open-Mode, Floating Electrode (FE-CAP), Floating Electrode with Flexible Termination (FF-CAP), and KEMET Power Solutions (KPS) product lines, providing a complete suite of flex mitigation solutions.
Combined with the stability of the U2J dielectric and designed to meet all capacitance requirements, these flex-resistant devices are RoHS-compliant, capable of up to 5mm of flexure, with capacitance change limited to -750 ± 20 ppm/°C over a temperature range of -55°C to +125°C. These devices are lead-free and fully compliant with RoHS and REACH standards, capable of withstanding multiple lead-free reflow soldering processes.
