Introduction
SN74HC238DR-JSM decodes three binary-weighted address inputs (A0, A1, and A2) into eight mutually exclusive outputs (Y0–Y7). The device features three enable inputs (E1, E2, and E3). All outputs remain low unless E1 and E2 are low and E3 is high. This multiple-enable function allows easy parallel expansion into a 32-line (5-to-32) decoder using only four SN74HC238DR-JSM ICs and one inverter. The SN74HC238DR-JSM can be used as an 8-output demultiplexer by using one active-low enable input as the data input port and the remaining enable inputs as strobe signals. Input clamp diodes are provided, enabling the inputs to be interfaced to voltages exceeding VCC through a current-limiting resistor.
