Introduction
MAX489E is a low-power RS-485 and RS-422 transceiver designed for harsh environments. Driver outputs and receiver inputs feature ±15kV ESD protection with no latch-up. The device contains one driver and one receiver. The 489E incorporates a slew-rate-limited driver to minimize EMI and reduce signal reflections caused by improperly terminated cables, enabling error-free data transmission at up to 250kbps. With the driver disabled and the line fully loaded, these transceivers consume only 120μA supply current. All devices operate from a single 5V supply. Short-circuit current is limited, and a thermal shutdown circuit provides protection by forcing the outputs into a high-impedance state to prevent excessive power dissipation. The receiver features a fail-safe function that guarantees a logic-high output under open-circuit conditions. The MAX489E is designed for full-duplex communication.
