Introduction
The robust analog front-end (AFE) devices of the bq769x0 series are commonly used as part of a complete battery pack monitoring and protection solution for next-generation high-power systems (e.g., light electric vehicles, power tools, and uninterruptible power supplies). The bq769x0 is designed with low-power requirements in mind. It can not only control the overall chip current consumption by enabling/disabling submodules in the integrated circuit (IC), but also easily switch the battery pack to an ultra-low-power state using the SHIP mode. The bq76920 device supports up to 5 series-connected batteries or a battery pack with a typical value of 18V; the bq76930 can handle up to 10 series-connected batteries or a battery pack with a typical value of 36V; and the bq76940 supports up to 15 series-connected batteries or a battery pack with a typical value of 48V. These AFEs can be used to manage various battery chemistries, such as lithium-ion, lithium iron phosphate, etc. Through I2C, the host controller can use the bq769x0 to perform many battery pack management functions, such as monitoring (battery voltage, battery pack current, battery pack temperature), protection (controlling charge/discharge FETs), and equalization functions. The integrated analog-to-digital (A/D) converter enables pure digital reading of key system parameters, and the calibration of these parameters is handled during the TI manufacturing process.
Features
- AFE monitoring features: purely digital interface internal ADC measures cell voltage, die temperature, and external thermistors; a separate internal ADC measures pack current (coulomb counter)
- Direct support for up to three thermistors (103AT)
- Hardware protection features: overcurrent in discharge (OCD), short circuit in discharge (SCD), overvoltage (OV), undervoltage (UV)
- Secondary protector fault detection
- Integrated cell balancing FET
- Charge/discharge low-side NCH FET drivers
- Alert interrupt to host MCU
- 2.5V or 3.3V output voltage regulator
- No EEPROM programming required
- High supply voltage maximum absolute rating (up to 108V)
- Simple I2C-compatible interface (CRC option)
- Random battery insertion tolerance
Applications
- Light Electric Vehicles (LEV): eBike, eScooter, Pedelec, and pedal-assist bicycles
- Power and garden tools
- Backup batteries and UPS systems
- Wireless base station backup systems
- 12V, 18V, 24V, 36V, and 48V battery packs
