The LM2596/LM2596HV series regulators are monolithic integrated circuits that provide all active functions for a buck (step-down) switching regulator, capable of driving a 3A load with excellent line and load regulation. These devices are available in fixed output voltage versions of 3.3V, 5V, and 12V, as well as an adjustable output version.

These regulators require a minimum number of external components, are simple to use, and have built-in frequency compensation and a fixed-frequency oscillator. The LM2596/LM2596HV series operates at a switching frequency of 50kHz, allowing filter components to be smaller than those required by lower-frequency switching regulators. This series is available in a standard 5-pin TO-220 package with multiple lead bend options, as well as a 5-pin TO-262 surface-mount package.

Several manufacturers offer standard inductor series optimized for the LM2596 family, greatly simplifying power supply design. Other features include a guaranteed output voltage tolerance of ±4% and an oscillator frequency tolerance of ±15% under specified input voltage and output load conditions. An external shutdown function is also included, with a typical standby current of 80μA. Protection features include two-stage frequency-reducing current limiting and thermal shutdown, providing comprehensive protection under fault conditions.
