Introduction
The LM2937 is a positive voltage regulator capable of delivering up to 500 mA of load current. A PNP pass transistor provides low-dropout characteristics. The typical minimum input-to-output voltage differential required to maintain output regulation at 500 mA load current is 0.5 V (maximum value ensured over the full operating temperature range). A special internal circuit reduces quiescent current to a typical value of 10 mA when the input-to-output voltage differential exceeds 3 V at 500 mA load current. The LM2937 requires an output bypass capacitor to ensure stability. As with most LDO regulators, the ESR of this capacitor remains a critical design parameter; however, a special compensation circuit incorporated in the LM2937 relaxes the ESR requirement. The device remains stable with any ESR below 3 Ω, allowing the use of low-ESR chip capacitors. The device is well suited for automotive applications, protecting itself and any load circuitry from reversed battery, dual-battery jumps, and load dump transients up to 60 V/−50 V. Standard regulator protection features such as short-circuit and thermal shutdown protection are also included.
