Introduction
The bq25570 device is specifically designed to efficiently harvest microwatt (μW) to milliwatt (mW) levels of electrical energy generated by various high-output-impedance DC sources, such as photovoltaic (solar) or thermoelectric generators (TEGs), without causing these input sources to fail. The battery management features ensure that the rechargeable battery is not overcharged by the harvested energy and that the voltage rise or drop does not exceed the safe limits of the system load. In addition to the high-efficiency boost charger, the bq25570 also integrates a high-efficiency, micropower buck converter to provide a second power rail for systems such as wireless sensor networks (WSNs) with strict power and operational requirements. All functions of the bq25570 are available in a 20-lead, 3.5mm×3.5mm QFN small-outline package (RGR).
Features
- Ultra-low power DC/DC boost charger
- Cold start voltage: VIN ≥ 600mV
- Continuous energy harvesting with input source as low as 100mV
- Input voltage regulation prevents high-impedance input source dropout
- 488nA (typical) quiescent current in full operation
- Transport battery save mode with battery current < 5nA
- Energy storage in rechargeable Li-ion batteries, thin-film batteries, supercapacitors, or conventional capacitors
- Battery charging and protection with internally set undervoltage level, user-programmable overvoltage level
- Battery good output flag
- Programmable threshold and hysteresis
- Power-loss-pending alarm for microcontroller, can be used to enable or disable system load
- Programmable buck-regulated output (step-down)
- Up to 93% efficiency, supporting 110mA peak output current (typical)
- Programmable maximum power point tracking (MPPT) for optimal energy extraction from multiple energy sources, including solar panels, thermoelectric and piezoelectric generators
