Introduction
The MAX3485E series devices (MAX3485E/MAX3488E/MAX3490E/MAX3491E) are low-power transceivers with ±15kV ESD protection, operating from a +3.3V supply, designed for RS-485 and RS-422 communications. Each device contains one driver and one receiver. The MAX3488E features a slew-rate-limited driver that minimizes EMI and reduces reflections caused by improperly terminated cables, enabling error-free data transmission at up to 1Mbps. The MAX3485E, MAX3490E, and MAX3491E support data rates up to 12Mbps. All devices feature enhanced ESD protection. All driver outputs and receiver inputs are protected to ±15kV (IEC 1000-4-2 air-gap discharge), ±8kV (IEC 1000-4-2 contact discharge), and ±15kV (Human Body Model). The driver features short-circuit current limiting and is protected against excessive power dissipation by a thermal shutdown circuit that places the driver outputs in a high-impedance state. The receiver inputs include a failsafe feature that guarantees a logic-high output when both inputs are open. The MAX3488E, MAX3490E, and MAX3491E support full-duplex communications, while the MAX3485E is designed for half-duplex communications.
