When a transient overvoltage occurs in the circuit and its amplitude exceeds the breakdown voltage of the gas discharge tube, the gas inside is ionized, causing the tube to conduct rapidly and clamping the overvoltage to a low level, thereby protecting parallel-connected electronic equipment or circuit components from damage caused by high-voltage surges. Once the overvoltage subsides, the gas discharge tube immediately returns to its high insulation resistance state and normal circuit operation resumes.
