Introduction
The MAX3221E is a single-driver, single-receiver RS-232 solution operating from a single Vcc supply. The RS-232 pins provide IEC 61000-4-2 ESD protection. The device meets the requirements of TIA/EIA-232-F and provides an electrical interface between an asynchronous communications controller and a serial port connector. The charge pump and four small external capacitors allow operation from a single 3-V to 5.5-V supply. These devices operate at data signaling rates up to 250 kbit/s with a maximum driver output slew rate of 30 V/µs.
Flexible power management control options are available. The auto-shutdown feature disables the driver and charge pump when the receiver is disconnected or the remote driver is powered down. The driver can be manually enabled or disabled. The INVALID output goes low when the receiver input is disconnected or the power supply is off.
Features
- RS-232 pin ESD protection: ±15 kV HBM, ±8 kV (IEC 61000-4-2, contact discharge), ±15 kV (IEC 61000-4-2, air-gap discharge)
- Meets or exceeds TIA/EIA 232-F and ITU v.28 requirements
- Operates from 3V to 5.5V VCC supply
- Supports data rates up to 250 kbit/s
- One driver and one receiver
- Low standby current: 1 μA typical
- Accepts 5V logic inputs from a 3.3V supply
- Auto-powerdown automatically disables driver to conserve power
- High-speed alternatives (1 Mbit/s) – SN75C3221E and SN65C3221E
Applications
- Battery-powered, handheld, and portable devices
- Notebooks and laptop computers
- Mobile phones and wireless devices
