Introduction
Gas discharge tubes normally remain in a high-insulation-resistance state, equivalent to an open circuit, with virtually no effect on normal circuit operation. When a transient overvoltage occurs in the circuit and its amplitude exceeds the breakdown voltage of the gas discharge tube, the gas inside the tube becomes ionized, causing the tube to conduct rapidly and clamp the overvoltage to a lower level, thereby protecting parallel-connected electronic equipment or circuit components from damage due to high-voltage surges. Once the overvoltage disappears, the gas discharge tube immediately returns to its high-insulation-resistance state and the circuit resumes normal operation. The SMD5542 series gas discharge tubes feature a high-voltage SMT package. Not only are they compact and easy to mount on various space-constrained PCBs, they also deliver excellent performance. The high AC withstand voltage and high insulation resistance ensure that circuit performance incurs no additional losses under normal operating conditions. The SMD5542 series gas discharge tubes are high-voltage (2000–4000V) components specifically designed for surge protection and high-isolation applications. They are also suitable for applications where bias voltages or signal levels of several hundred volts are typically present. They can further be used in combination with varistors to provide outstanding protection performance in AC applications.
