Introduction
The INA186 is a low-power voltage-output current-sense amplifier (also known as a current shunt monitor). This device is commonly used in overcurrent protection, precision current measurement for system optimization, or closed-loop feedback circuits. The INA186 senses the voltage drop across a shunt resistor at common-mode voltages from –0.2V to +40V, independent of the supply voltage.
The low input bias current of the INA186 allows the use of larger current-sense resistors, enabling precise current measurements at the microampere level. The low offset voltage of the zero-drift architecture extends the dynamic range of current measurement. This feature allows smaller sense resistors to provide accurate current measurement while maintaining lower power dissipation.
The INA186 operates from a 1.7V to 5.5V single supply and consumes a maximum supply current of 90μA when enabled. Five fixed gain options are available: 25V/V, 50V/V, 100V/V, 200V/V, or 500V/V. The device is rated for an operating temperature range of –40°C to +125°C and is available in SC70, SOT-23-THIN, and DSBGA packages. The SC70 and SOT-23 (DDF) packages support bidirectional current measurement, while the DSBGA package supports unidirectional current measurement only.
