ISL3172 is a ±15kV ESD-protected, 5V supply, single transceiver that complies with both RS-485 and RS-422 balanced communication standards. It also features higher output voltage and faster data rates required for high-speed PROFIBUS applications, suitable for industrial and extended industrial (-40°C to +125°C) temperature ranges. This allows up to 160 transceivers on a network without violating RS-485 specification load limits or requiring the use of repeaters. The transceiver requires a 5V ±10% tolerance supply and delivers a minimum differential output voltage of 2.1V across this supply range. This means better noise immunity (data integrity) and longer reach. SCSI applications benefit from the ISL3172E's low receiver and transmitter part-to-part skew. The ISL3172E is ideal for high-speed parallel applications requiring simultaneous capture of a large number of bits. Low bit-to-bit skew alleviates timing constraints on data latch signals. The receiver (Rx) input features a "full fail-safe" design that ensures a logic high output when the Rx input is floating, shorted, or grounded but undriven. High drive levels enable easy design of opto-isolated interfaces. Hot-swap circuitry ensures the Tx and Rx outputs remain in a high-impedance state while the supply is stabilizing. The driver (Tx) output features short-circuit protection, even when the voltage exceeds the supply voltage. In addition, an on-chip thermal shutdown circuit can disable the Tx output to prevent damage from excessive power dissipation.
