Introduction
Gas discharge tubes (GDTs) normally remain in a high-insulation-resistance state, equivalent to an open circuit, with negligible impact on normal circuit operation. When a transient overvoltage occurs in the circuit and its amplitude exceeds the breakdown voltage of the GDT, the gas inside the tube becomes ionized, causing the GDT to conduct rapidly and clamping the overvoltage to a lower level, thereby protecting parallel-connected electronic equipment or circuit components from high-voltage surge damage. Once the overvoltage subsides, the GDT immediately returns to its high-insulation-resistance state and normal circuit operation resumes. The 2RB-5 series GDTs are available in axial-lead or surface-mount packages. These devices are not only compact and easy to install on various space-constrained PCBs, but also deliver excellent performance. In high-frequency communication circuits, their low-capacitance characteristics minimize signal interference. The high insulation resistance ensures no additional losses to circuit performance under normal operating conditions. In addition to communication interface protection, the series' ability to withstand high surge currents also makes it suitable for power supply protection.
