Introduction
The VL53L4CD sensor is designed for proximity and short-range distance measurement. It delivers highly accurate distance measurements ranging from just 1 mm to 1200 mm. This next-generation laser emitter features an 18° field of view. It offers improved performance in ambient light conditions, with a ranging speed of up to 100 Hz. The VL53L4CD incorporates an ultra-low-power mode for continuous field-of-view monitoring. Its power consumption is extremely low — as little as 55 μA — optimized for battery-powered devices. The sensor processes data on-chip, eliminating the need to send raw data to the host. When a target is detected, it sends an interrupt to the host. This integrated on-chip processing reduces design complexity and BOM cost, enabling the use of lower-performance, more cost-effective microcontrollers. FlightSense technology and the operating principle of the VL53L4CD inspired the liquid level monitoring example code. This advanced solution enables non-mechanical sensor-based liquid level measurement, reducing risks associated with corrosion and rust. It delivers accurate measurements across a wide range of liquids, from water to fuel. Like all ST FlightSense time-of-flight sensors, the VL53L4CD measures distance independent of target color and reflectance. The VL53L4CD comes in a miniature reflowable package integrating a single-photon avalanche diode array. It achieves optimal ranging performance under various ambient lighting conditions and with multiple cover glass materials. All ST time-of-flight sensors integrate a VCSEL that emits fully invisible 940 nm infrared light. This light is Class 1 certified and completely eye-safe.
