Introduction
Gas discharge tubes (GDTs) normally operate in a high-insulation-resistance state, equivalent to an open circuit, with virtually no impact on normal circuit operation. When a transient overvoltage occurs in the circuit and its amplitude exceeds the breakdown voltage of the GDT, the gas inside the tube becomes ionized, causing the GDT to conduct rapidly and clamp the overvoltage to a lower level. This protects the electronic devices or circuit components connected in parallel from damage due to high-voltage surges. Once the overvoltage subsides, the GDT immediately returns to its high-insulation-resistance state and normal circuit operation resumes. The SMD2921 series is a surface-mount GDT and represents one of the smallest GDTs currently available on the market. The SMD2921 series features ultra-low capacitance and can withstand high surge currents without sustaining damage. This series is designed for installation on compact PCBs and can be used to protect communication interfaces — such as Ethernet and RS-232 — against interface IC damage caused by induced lightning strikes, ESD, and similar events, while ensuring stable transmission of communication signals.
