Introduction
The A3988 is a quad DMOS full-bridge driver capable of driving up to two stepper motors or four DC motors. Each full-bridge output is rated at up to 1.2 A and 36 V. The A3988 incorporates fixed off-time PWM current regulators and a 2-bit nonlinear DAC, enabling full-step, half-step, and quarter-step control for stepper motors, as well as forward, reverse, and coast mode control for DC motors. The PWM current regulator employs Allegro™ patented mixed decay mode to reduce audible motor noise, improve step accuracy, and reduce power dissipation. An internal synchronous rectification control circuit is provided to improve power dissipation during PWM operation. Protection features include thermal shutdown with hysteresis, UVLO, and crossover-current protection, with no special power-up sequencing required. The A3988 is available in two packages — EV and JP — both with an exposed power pad for improved thermal performance. The EV package is a 6 mm × 6 mm, 36-pin QFN with a nominal overall package height of 0.90 mm. The JP package is a 7 mm × 7 mm, 48-pin LQFP. Both packages are lead (Pb) free with 100% matte tin leadframe plating.
