Introduction
OPT4001 is an optical-to-digital sensor (single-chip illuminance meter) for measuring visible light intensity. The sensor's spectral response closely matches the photopic response of the human eye. A specially designed on-chip filter removes the near-infrared component from common light sources to enable accurate light intensity measurements. The OPT4001 output is semi-logarithmic, featuring 9 binary-logarithmic full-scale light ranges with highly linear response within each range, enabling the PicoStar™ version to measure from 312.5μlux to 83klux and the SOT-5X3 version from 437.5μlux to 117klux. This capability provides the light sensor with a 28-bit effective dynamic range. With built-in automatic full-scale range selection logic, users do not need to select the appropriate gain setting based on illuminance level. The optical filter designed into the OPT4001 provides robust infrared rejection, which helps maintain high accuracy even when the sensor is placed beneath dark glass — a common requirement in end-product industrial design for aesthetic reasons. The OPT4001 is designed for systems requiring illuminance level detection to enhance user experience. The device typically replaces low-accuracy photodiodes, photoresistors, and other ambient light sensors using its unobtrusive human-eye-matching and near-infrared rejection capabilities. The OPT4001 can be configured in 12 steps to operate with light conversion times from 600μs to 800ms, providing system flexibility as needed by the application. Conversion time includes both light acquisition time and ADC conversion time. Measurement resolution is determined by both light intensity and acquisition time; the PicoStar™ version can effectively measure light intensity changes as small as 312.5μlux, while the SOT-5X3 version can effectively measure changes as small as 437.5μlux. Digital operation offers flexibility for system integration. Measurements can be continuous or one-shot triggered via register write or hardware pin (SOT-5X3 version only). The device provides threshold detection logic, allowing the processor to enter sleep mode while the sensor monitors for appropriate wake events to report via the interrupt pin (SOT-5X3 version only). Digital output reports illuminance levels via an I²C- and SMBus-compatible two-wire serial interface. An internal FIFO on the output register allows measurement readback from the sensor at a slower rate while retaining all data captured by the device. The OPT4001 also supports I2C burst mode to help the host read data from the FIFO with reduced I²C overhead. The OPT4001 combines low power consumption with low supply voltage to extend battery life in battery-powered systems.
