Introduction
Gas Discharge Tubes (GDTs) are connected in parallel at the front end of sensitive telecommunications equipment (such as power lines, communication lines, signal lines, and data transmission lines) to help protect equipment from damage caused by transient surge voltages that may result from lightning strikes and equipment switching operations. These devices have no effect on signals during normal operation. However, when an overvoltage surge occurs (such as a lightning strike), the GDT switches to a low-impedance state and diverts energy away from sensitive equipment. Our GDTs offer a high level of surge protection, wide voltage range, low capacitance, and a variety of package sizes (including new surface-mount devices), making them suitable for Main Distribution Frame (MDF) modules, high data rate telecommunications applications (e.g., ADSL, VDSL), and surge protection on power lines. Their low capacitance characteristics also reduce signal distortion. When used in conjunction with PolySwitch devices in a coordinated circuit protection scheme, they can help equipment manufacturers meet stringent safety regulatory standards.
