Introduction
Littelfuse gas discharge tubes (GDTs) are installed in parallel at the front end of sensitive telecom equipment on power lines, communication lines, signal lines, and data transmission lines, helping to protect equipment from damage caused by transient surge voltages resulting from lightning strikes and equipment switching operations. These devices have no effect on signals during normal operation. However, when an overvoltage surge occurs (such as a lightning strike), the GDT switches to a low-impedance state, diverting energy away from sensitive equipment. Our GDTs offer high-level surge protection, wide voltage range, low capacitance, and a variety of package sizes (including new SMT devices), making them suitable for applications such as main distribution frame modules, high-speed telecom applications (e.g., ADSL, VDSL), and surge protection on power lines. The low capacitance characteristic also reduces signal distortion. When used in conjunction with PolySwitch devices to form a coordinated circuit protection solution, they can help equipment manufacturers meet stringent safety regulatory standards.
