Introduction
The power supply provides a stable 5V output to the system microcontroller and drives eight low-side switches. The brownout detection output (BO_OUTZ) warns the system when the supply voltage temporarily drops, enabling the system to prevent potentially hazardous conditions. A serial communication interface controls the eight low-side outputs, each with an internal snubber circuit to absorb inductive loads during turn-off. Alternatively, the system can use a freewheeling diode connected to V_IN to help recirculate energy in inductive loads during turn-off. The 5V regulator is powered by V_IN and, under operating conditions, delivers a regulated output within 5V ± 5%. The open-drain power-on reset (RST̄) pin remains low until the regulator exceeds the set threshold and the timer value set by the capacitor on the reset delay (RDELAY) pin expires. When both conditions are met, RST is asserted high, indicating to the microcontroller that serial communication with the TPI C9202 may begin. Serial communication uses an 8-bit format, with data transfer synchronized by a serial clock from the microcontroller. A single register controls all outputs (one bit per output), with a default value of zero (off). If PWM functionality is required for an output, the register must be updated at a rate higher than the desired PWM frequency. OUT1 can be controlled either by the microcontroller's serial input or by a dedicated enable (EN1) pin. If EN1 is pulled low or left floating, OUT1 is controlled via serial input through the shift register; if EN1 is pulled high, OUT1 is always on and the serial input for OUT1 is ignored. The brownout (BO) input is derived from a voltage divider on the input supply to determine whether the supply voltage has dropped to an undesired level. If the input voltage falls below the programmed value, BO_OUTZ is pulled low and all outputs are disabled. Once the input supply line recovers to the minimum desired level, the outputs return to their previously programmed state. If RST is asserted, all outputs are internally turned off and the input register is reset to all zeros. The microcontroller must write data to the register to turn the outputs on again.
