Introduction
The TPS2584x-Q1 is a USB Type-A BC1.2 charging solution that integrates a synchronous DC/DC converter. With cable drop compensation, VBUS remains constant regardless of load current variation, ensuring connected portable devices are charged at the appropriate current and voltage even under heavy load.
The TPS2584x-Q1 includes high-bandwidth analog switches for DP and DM pass-through.
The TPS25840-Q1 also integrates battery short-circuit protection on the VBUS, DM_IN, and DP_IN pins. These pins can withstand voltages up to 18V. The TPS25842-Q1 does not support data line (Dx) to VBAT short-circuit protection.
The synchronous buck regulator features current-mode control with internal compensation, simplifying design. A resistor on the RT pin sets the switching frequency between 300kHz and 2.2MHz. Operating below 400kHz achieves higher system efficiency, while operating above 2.1MHz avoids the AM radio band and enables use of smaller inductors.
An integrated precision current-sense amplifier enables user-programmable cable drop compensation and current limit adjustment. Cable compensation allows the buck regulator output voltage to vary linearly with load current, offsetting the voltage drop caused by wire resistance in automotive cable routing, helping portable devices achieve optimal charging current and voltage under heavy load. The VBUS voltage measured at the connected portable device remains approximately constant regardless of load current, allowing the portable device's battery charger to maintain optimal operating conditions.
The USB specification requires USB charging ports to meet current limits, while allowing reasonable design flexibility for system designers to select overcurrent protection levels based on system requirements. The TPS2584x-Q1 employs a novel dual-threshold current limit circuit, allowing system designers to program the average current limit protection of the buck regulator, or adjust the current limit using an external NMOS between the CSN/OUT and BUS pins. With the NFET implementation, the TPS2584x-Q1 buck regulator can provide a 5V output to other loads during an overcurrent fault on the USB port.
Protection features include cycle-by-cycle current limiting, hiccup short-circuit protection, undervoltage lockout, VBUS overvoltage and overcurrent protection, data line (Dx) to VBUS short-circuit protection, and die overtemperature protection.
The TPS25840-Q1 includes high-bandwidth analog switches for DP and DM pass-through and supports data line (Dx) to VBAT short-circuit protection. The TPS25842-Q1 does not support data line (Dx) to VBAT short-circuit protection.
