Introduction
Power levels up to 240W combined with fine pin pitch create a significantly elevated risk of dangerous overheating in USB Type-C devices and their charging cables. Environmental factors can also cause devices to overheat — conditions such as dust, dirt, lint, water, and other liquids can all lead to failures. Mechanical failures, such as bent pins or cable abrasion, can cause overcurrent events; other mechanical failures may result in device wear that, over time, also becomes a heat source and ultimately leads to failure. USB Type-C performs its configuration process via the Configuration Channel (commonly referred to as the CC pins), which handles multiple functions including confirming cable connection or disconnection, plug orientation, and the power delivery protocol negotiated over the cable. The setP digital temperature indicator is designed to be placed on the CC line within the plug. It senses heat, causing its resistance to rise, which increases the voltage on the CC line and causes the system to interpret this as a disconnected state, thereby shutting down VBUS power.
Features
- Senses heat to increase resistance, raising CC line voltage to shut off VBUS power
- Low current: CC line current ~333µA, VCONN maximum current up to 500mA
- Compatible with most modern cable assembly processes
Applications
- USB Type-C devices
- Charging cables
