Introduction
The bq24190, bq24192, and bq24192I are highly integrated switch-mode battery management and system power path management devices suitable for single-cell lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries in various tablets and other portable devices. Its low-impedance power path optimizes the efficiency of switch-mode operation, reduces battery charging time, and extends battery life during the discharge phase. The I²C serial interface for charging and system settings makes this device a truly flexible solution.
This device supports a wide range of input sources, including standard USB host ports, USB charging ports, and high-power DC adapters. To set the default input current limit, the bq24190 detects the input source according to the USB Battery Charging Specification 1.2, while the bq24192 and bq24192I obtain the results from the system detection circuit (such as a USB PHY device). The bq24190, 192, and 192I comply with the USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 power specifications and have input current and voltage regulation functions.
Meanwhile, the bq24190, bq24192, and bq24192I have a current-limiting capability of up to 1.3A and can provide 5V voltage for VBUS, complying with the USB On-the-Go (OTG) operating power rating specification. The power path management regulates the system voltage to be slightly higher than the battery voltage but not lower than the minimum system voltage of 3.5V (programmable). With this feature, the system can continue to operate even when the battery is completely depleted or removed.
When the input current limit or voltage limit is reached, the power path management automatically reduces the charging current to 0. As the system load continues to increase, the power path discharges the battery before meeting the system power demand. This supplementary mode of operation prevents the input source from being overloaded.
This device starts and completes a charging cycle without software control. It automatically detects the battery voltage and charges the battery through three stages: pre-charging, constant current, and constant voltage. At the end of the charging cycle, when the charging current is lower than the preset limit in the constant voltage stage, the charger automatically terminates. When the entire battery voltage drops below the recharge threshold, the charger automatically starts another charging cycle.
The bq24190, bq24192, and bq24192I provide various safety features for battery charging and system operation, including two sets of negative temperature coefficient thermistor monitoring, a charging safety timer, and overvoltage/overcurrent protection. When the junction temperature exceeds 120°C (configurable), thermal regulation reduces the charging current. The STAT output reports the charging status and any fault conditions. The PG output in the bq24192 and bq24192I indicates whether the power supply is normal. When a fault occurs, the INT immediately notifies the host.
The bq24190, bq24192, and bq24192I are available in a 24-pin, 4.00mm×4.00mm very thin quad flat no-lead (VQFN) package.
