Introduction
The UCD3138 is a digital power controller that offers high integration and excellent performance in a single-chip solution. The flexible features of the UCD3138 make this device suitable for a wide variety of power conversion applications. In addition, the various peripherals within the device have been specifically optimized to enhance the performance of AC/DC and isolated DC/DC applications and reduce the number of solution components in information technology (IT) and network infrastructure spaces. The UCD3138 controller is a fully programmable solution that allows customers to have full control over related applications and stand out among similar solutions. Meanwhile, efforts are made to simplify users' development work by providing first-class development tools, including application firmware, the Code Composer Studio software development environment, and a power development GUI, which enable users to configure and monitor key system parameters.
The core of the UCD3138 controller is the digital control loop peripheral, also known as the Digital Power Peripheral (DPP). Each DPP implements a high-speed digital control loop, which consists of a dedicated error analog-to-digital converter (EADC), a PID-based dual-pole/dual-zero digital compensator, and a DPWM output with a pulse width resolution of 250 ps. This device also includes a 12-bit, 267 ksps general-purpose ADC with up to 15 channels, timers, interrupt control, PMBus, and UART communication ports.
This device is based on a 32-bit ARM7TDMI-S Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC) microcontroller, which can perform real-time monitoring, configure peripherals, and manage communications. The ARM microcontroller executes its programs from programmable flash memory as well as on-chip RAM and ROM.
In addition to the FDPP, specific power management peripherals have been added to enable high efficiency, high integration for increased power density, reliability, and the lowest overall system cost across the entire operating range, as well as high flexibility to support the widest number of control architectures and topologies. Such peripherals include: light load burst mode, synchronous rectification, LLC and phase-shifted full-bridge mode switching, input voltage feedforward, copper trace current sensing, ideal diode emulation, constant current/constant power control, synchronous rectification soft start and stop, peak current mode control, flux balancing, secondary-side input voltage sensing, high-resolution current sharing, hardware-configurable soft start with pre-biased voltage, etc.
Topology support has been optimized for voltage mode and peak current mode controlled phase-shifted full bridges, single and dual-phase power factor correction (PFC), bridgeless PFC, hard-switched full and half bridges, and LLC half and full bridges.
