Introduction
TI's MSP series of ultra-low-power microcontrollers comes in a wide variety. Each member device is equipped with different peripheral sets to meet various applications. This architecture, when used in conjunction with multiple low-power modes, is the optimal choice for extending the battery life of portable measurement applications. The device features a powerful 16-bit Reduced Instruction Set (RISC) CPU, which uses 16-bit registers and a constant generator to achieve the highest coding efficiency. This Digitally Controlled Oscillator (DCO) enables the device to wake up from the low-power mode to the active mode in less than 5µs. The MSP430F5510, MSP430F5509, and MSP430F5508 devices are configured as microcontrollers, with integrated USB and PHY supporting USB 2.0, four 16-bit timers, one high-performance 10-bit ADC, two USCI (1), one hardware multiplier, DMA, an RTC module with an alarm function, and 31 or 47 I/O pins. The MSP430F5507, MSP430F5506, MSP430F5505, and MSP430F5504 devices are microcontrollers, equipped with integrated USB and PHY supporting USB 2.0, four 16-bit timers, one high-performance 10-bit ADC, one USCI, one hardware multiplier, DMA, an RTC module with an alarm function, and 31 I/O pins. The peripherals of the MSP430F5503, MSP430F5502, MSP430F5501, and MSP430F5500 devices are almost the same as those of the MSP430F5507, MSP430F5506, MSP430F5505, and MSP430F5504 devices, except that the 10-bit ADC is replaced with a comparator. Typical applications include analog and digital sensor systems and data loggers that need to connect to various USB hosts.
