Introduction
The Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter (UART) performs serial-to-I²C bus conversion of data characters received from a peripheral device or modem, and I²C bus-to-serial conversion of data characters sent by the host. The host can read the complete status of the UART at any time during functional operation. The UART can be placed in a standby mode (FIFO mode) to reduce excessive software overhead on the host by buffering received/transmitted characters. The receiver and transmitter FIFOs can store up to 64 characters (the receiver FIFO also includes 3 additional error status bits per character) and feature selectable or programmable trigger levels. The UART supports optional hardware flow control and software flow control. Hardware flow control automatically manages the serial data flow using RTS output and CTS input signals, significantly reducing software overhead and improving system efficiency. Software flow control automatically manages the data flow using programmable Xon/Xoff characters. The UART includes a programmable baud rate generator that can divide the timing reference clock input by a divisor between 1 and (2¹⁶ - 1).
