Introduction
The TPD6S300 is a single-chip USB Type-C port protection solution that provides 20V VBus short-circuit overvoltage and IEC ESD protection. Since the release of the USB Type-C connector, many USB Type-C products and accessories that do not comply with the USB Type-C specifications have been released. One example is the USB Type-C power delivery adapter that only applies 20V voltage on the VBus line. Another problem with USB Type-C is that due to the extremely close proximity of the pins in this small connector, mechanical torsion and sliding of the connector may short-circuit the pins. This may cause the 20V VBus to short-circuit with the CC and SBU pins. In addition, due to the extremely close proximity of the pins in the Type-C connector, there is a serious problem that debris and moisture can cause the 20V VBus pins to short-circuit with the CC and SBU pins. These non-ideal devices and mechanical events require the CC and SBU pins to have a 20V tolerance, even though they only operate at 5V or lower voltages. The TPD6S300 enables the CC and SBU pins to achieve a 20V tolerance by providing overvoltage protection on the CC and SBU pins without interfering with normal operation. The device places high-voltage FETs in series on the SBU and CC lines. When a voltage higher than the OVP threshold is detected on these lines, the high-voltage switch is turned on, isolating the rest of the system from the high-voltage condition present on the connector. Finally, most systems require IEC61000 - 4 - 2 system-level ESD protection for their external pins. The TPD6S300 integrates IEC 61000 - 4 - 2 ESD protection for the CC1, CC2, SBU1, SBU2, DP, and DM pins, eliminating the need for externally placed high-voltage TVS diodes on the connector.
Features
- 4-channel VBus short-circuit overvoltage protection (CC1, CC2, SBU1, SBU2): 24V DC tolerant
- 6-channel IEC 61000-4-2 ESD protection (CC1, CC2, SBU1, SBU2, DP, DM)
- CC1, CC2 overvoltage protection FET 600mA, capable of passing VCONN power
- Integrated CC dead-battery resistors for handling dead-battery use cases in mobile devices
- 3mm×3mm WQFN package
Applications
- Laptops
- Tablets
- Smartphones
- Monitor and TV docking stations
