Introduction
The DS1996 Memory iButton is a rugged, read/write data carrier that serves as a local database, easily accessible with minimal hardware. Its nonvolatile memory provides a simple solution for storing and retrieving critical information associated with the object to which the iButton is attached. Data is transferred serially via the 1-Wire protocol, which requires only a single data line and ground return. The scratchpad is an additional page that acts as a buffer when writing to memory. Data is first written to the scratchpad, where it can be read back. Once verified, data is transferred to memory via the Copy Scratchpad command. This process ensures data integrity when modifying memory. Each DS1996 is laser-engraved at the factory with a 48-bit serial number, providing a guaranteed unique identity for full traceability. The rugged MicroCan package offers high resistance to environmental hazards such as dust, moisture, and shock. Its compact button-shaped profile self-aligns with mating receptacles for easy manual handling. With accessories, the DS1996 can be mounted on virtually any surface, including plastic key fobs, photo ID badges, and PCBs.
