Introduction
Solar cells are classified by material into crystalline silicon, amorphous silicon, and compound semiconductor types. Amorphous silicon refers to an amorphous material whose atoms are arranged irregularly, unlike crystalline silicon where atoms are arranged in an orderly structure. Photons interact with silicon atoms more frequently in amorphous silicon than in crystalline silicon, enabling greater light absorption and allowing the fabrication of ultra-thin amorphous silicon films less than 1μm thick for power generation. Panasonic developed the world's first integrated (series-connectable) amorphous silicon solar cell, Amorton, which forms films on a series of substrates using decomposed material gases. Through patterning technology, multiple series-connected solar cells can be created on a single substrate, enabling the design of solar cells with any desired voltage for any application.
Features
- Easily meets device drive voltage requirements: amorphous silicon solar cells can be connected in series during formation, unlike crystalline silicon solar cell manufacturing technology, making it easy to produce cells with a wide range of voltages.
- Versatile form factors: the manufacturing process for amorphous silicon thin films allows substrates such as stainless steel or plastic film to replace conventional glass substrates, enabling the production of circular, square, or other complex-shaped and even flexible solar cells; transparent glass-only regions can also be created within cells through etching.
- High sensitivity across the visible light spectrum: amorphous silicon solar cells are sensitive to light in the approximately 400 to 700nm wavelength range, closely matching the sensitivity range of the human eye, making them suitable for use as visible light sensors.
Applications
- Watches/Clocks/Wall Clocks
- Calculators
- Energy Harvesting Devices
- Wireless Sensor Networks/RFID Tags/RF Remote Controls for Digital Home Appliances, etc.
- Wearable Terminal Power Supplies
