Introduction
The TPS2549 device is a USB charging port controller and power switch with a current-sensing output that can control the upstream power. This device can maintain the USB port voltage at 5V, even when the charging current is too large. This is crucial for systems with long USB cables because such systems will experience significant voltage drops during the rapid charging of portable devices. The 47mΩ power switch of the TP2549 has two selectable programmable current limits, which can support port power management by providing a lower current limit when the adjacent port is carrying a high load. This is crucial for systems with multiple ports where the upstream power cannot provide full-load current to all ports simultaneously. The DCP_Auto scheme communicates with the connected device by detecting and selecting appropriate D+ and D– settings to achieve rapid charging under full-load current conditions. The integrated CDP detection supports rapid charging for most portable devices using synchronous data communication, with a charging current of up to 1.5A. The unique client mode function allows the software to be updated to a client device while avoiding power conflicts by turning off the internal power switch while keeping the data lines connected. In addition, the TPS2549 device integrates VBUS short-circuit protection for D+ and D-, which can prevent damage in case of an accidental short circuit between D+ and/or D- and VBUS. To save application space, the TPS2549 device also integrates ESD protection, meeting the IEC61000 - 4 - 2 standard without the need for external circuits on D+ and D-.
