Introduction
The Sharp GP2W0004YP features a wide operating voltage range and is one of the smallest 1-meter IrDA transceiver modules available. It provides an interface between logic signals and infrared signals for over-the-air, serial, half-duplex infrared wireless data links, designed to meet IrDA physical layer specifications.
The device incorporates integrated EMI shielding. Infrared energy is inherently immune to EMI; however, the receiving device is susceptible to it. This shielding provides additional protection in noisy environments such as PCs and other digital products.
The Sharp GP2W0004YP infrared transceiver module contains a high-speed, high-efficiency, low-power AlGaAs LED, a silicon PIN photodiode, and a low-power bipolar IC. The IC includes an LED driver circuit and a receiver that provides an RX output. IrDA data rates from 2.4 kbit/s to 115.2 kbit/s are supported at both 20 cm and 1-meter distances. At 1-meter range, the emitter current is approximately IF = 100 mA, or IF = 27 mA in IrDA low-power option communication mode. This dual-mode communication capability broadens the range of end-product applications, such as wireless data links with PCs, PDAs, or any other IrDA-compliant devices already on the market.
The GP2W0004YP transceiver module operates over a supply voltage range of 2.4 V to 5.5 V without performance degradation. This allows a single device to be used across a variety of design applications. The LED voltage is independent and can be supplied by a secondary power source, enabling the main supply voltage to connect directly to the IC controller. The LED can be connected to the device battery or another higher-voltage source.
The GP2W0004YP also includes an integrated echo cancellation feature that disables the RX data output when the transmitting LED is driven by TX data.
The transceiver module features a built-in shutdown mode for applications that are highly sensitive to current consumption. In shutdown mode, receiver circuit current consumption can be reduced to 1 μA (maximum). During shutdown, the transmitter output is disabled, preventing input data from driving the LED when the IrDA transceiver is one of multiple devices on an I/O line.
Features
- IrDA 115 kbit/s, 1 m transceiver
- Compact package – 9.21 mm (W) × 3.86 mm (D) × 2.71 mm (H)
