Introduction
TMF8820, TMF8821, and TMF8828 are a family of direct Time-of-Flight (dToF) sensors in a small module package with an integrated Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL). The dToF device is based on Single Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD), Time-to-Digital Converter (TDC), and histogram technology, with a detection range of up to 5000 mm. Due to the lens on its SPAD, it supports 3x3, 4x4, 3x6, and 8x8 multi-zone output data, along with a very wide and dynamically adjustable field of view. A Multi-Lens Array (MLA) above the in-package VCSEL expands the Field of Illumination (FoI). All raw data processing is performed on-chip, and the TMF8820/21/28 provides distance information and confidence values via its I²C interface. The TMF8820 supports 3x3 zone operation, the TMF8821 supports 3x3, 4x4, and 3x6 zone operation, and the TMF8828 supports 3x3, 4x4, 3x6, and 8x8 zone operation. The TMF8828 requires unique firmware (distinct from TMF8820/21/28) that is exclusively for the TMF8828. The TMF8828 has two operating modes: it can operate as a TMF8820/21/28 (3x3, 4x4, or 3x6 zones), or in TMF8828 mode with 8x8 zones. In TMF8828 mode, the device implements the 8x8 zone capability as a time-multiplexed measurement sequence of four 4x4 zones (similar to TMF8821). Therefore, the host must sequentially execute four factory calibration sequences, load calibration data, read result measurements, and optionally read histograms (refer to the Host Driver Communication manual for details). The maximum measurement cycle rate in TMF8828 mode is 15 Hz with 125k iterations. Slower cycle rates with increased iterations are also supported.
Applications
- Camera autofocus distance measurement - Laser Detection Autofocus - LDAF (mobile phones)
- Presence detection (computing and communications)
- Object detection and obstacle avoidance (robotics)
- Light curtain (industrial)
