Introduction
The TPS546D24 is a highly integrated non-isolated DC/DC converter with a high operating frequency and a current output of 40A. It comes in a 7mm×5mm package. Two, three, or four TPS546D24 devices can be interconnected to provide a maximum current of 160A on a single output. The device can overdrive the internal 5V LDO using an external 5V power supply through the VDD5 pin to improve efficiency and reduce the converter's power consumption.
The TPS546D24 uses a proprietary fixed-frequency current-mode control with input feedforward and optional internal compensation components, which can minimize the size and improve stability under various output capacitances. The PMBus interface supports a 1MHz clock, providing a convenient and standardized digital interface for converter configuration and enabling the monitoring of key parameters such as output voltage, output current, and internal die temperature. The response to fault conditions can be set to restart, latch, or ignore, depending on the system requirements.
Reverse-channel communication between stacked devices allows all TPS546D24 converters to power a single output rail and share one address, simplifying system software/firmware design. Key parameters such as output voltage, switching frequency, soft-start time, and overcurrent fault limit can also be configured through BOM selection without PMBus communication to support unprogrammed power-up.
