Introduction
The RPLIDAR A3M1 is a next-generation low-cost 360-degree 2D laser scanner (LIDAR) solution developed by SLAMTEC. It is capable of acquiring up to 16,000 laser ranging samples per second at high rotational speed, and features SLAMTEC's patented OPTMAG technology, which overcomes the lifespan limitations of traditional LIDAR systems to enable stable long-term operation. The system performs 2D 360-degree scanning within a 25-meter range, and the generated 2D point cloud data can be used for mapping, localization, and object/environment modeling. Compared to other RPLIDAR series, the RPLIDAR A3M1 delivers more stable performance when detecting distant objects, alternating black-and-white objects, and objects under direct sunlight, making it ideal for outdoor mapping applications within a 25-meter ranging radius. It supports two alternating operating modes: Boost Mode and Outdoor Mode. In Boost Mode, it operates at maximum ranging radius and sampling rate for optimal mapping performance in indoor environments; in Outdoor Mode, the RPLIDAR A3M1 offers stronger resistance to sunlight interference, preventing it from "going blind" in outdoor environments. The RPLIDAR A3M1 has a typical scan frequency of 10 Hz (600 rpm), which can be freely adjusted between 5–20 Hz according to specific requirements. At a 10 Hz scan frequency, the sampling rate is 16 kHz with an angular resolution of 0.225°. Thanks to improvements in SLAMTEC's hardware operational performance and associated algorithms, the RPLIDAR A3M1 performs well in a variety of indoor environments as well as outdoor environments with direct sunlight. In addition, every RPLIDAR A3M1 unit undergoes rigorous testing before shipment to ensure that the laser output power complies with the IEC 60825 Class 1 eye safety standard.
